11 Epic Necklaces That Are Absolute Head-turners

How about we start the New Year with a bang and a whole lot of beautiful bling? We pick some epic necklaces that raise the bar in terms of craftsmanship, gemstone selection and design ingenuity

Chopard

Chopard’s annual Red Carpet Collection never fails to present us with pieces that literally make the jaw drop and this spectacular necklace is one of them. Made from Fairmined gold and aluminium, the necklace — which is one of the 73 pieces that make the collection — features a 19.3-carat pear-shaped citrine that’s surrounded by a suite of spessartite garnets, citrines, diamonds and white opal cabochons. This time around, Chopard’s artistic director Caroline Scheufele, a great lover of nature, designed the jewels along the themes of flora and fauna, and all were made at its high-jewellery atelier in Geneva by its in-house artisans, jewellers, gem-setters and polishers.

Van Cleef & Arpels

This playful yet magnificent Pompon Margaret long necklace watch by Van Cleef & Arpels is made with rows of cultured pearls and in a tassel-like fashion that highlights a 6.19-carat Sri Lankan sapphire — the star of the piece. The remarkably intense colour of the sapphire contrasts stunningly with strands of immaculately white pearls and lapis lazuli beads. Hidden beneath the central motif is a secret dial that reveals itself by pressing one of the diamonds. Meant to be worn in several ways, this piece can transform into a secret watch, a shorter necklace, and different bracelets.

Cartier

I bet you’ve never seen panther fur quite like this before. Cartier reinterprets it in this incredible Hemis necklace that’s made in platinum and set with a cushion-cut kunzite and a suite of opals, and pink and white brilliant-cut diamonds. The star of the piece is undoubtedly the flawless 71.80-carat cushion-shaped kunzite that boasts an intense pink colour with a hint of purple, which is highlighted by opals of a wide array of colours — ranging from blue to purple-grey — translucency and shapes. The multidimensionality of the piece was achieved with its use of irregular-shaped opals that were polished to look like shiny pebbles, a vision that required hundreds of hours of work and numerous discussions between the designer, gem cutter and the gemstone expert to realise.

Bvlgari

Celebrating Bulgari’s passion and long ties with the silver screen, the Cinemagia high jewellery collection uses daring colour combinations, unconventional materials and a myriad of gemstone cuts to create bold and imaginative pieces. Case in point is this necklace mad e in pink gold that features eight outstanding oval-shaped stones, namely a27.28-carat topaz, 22.98-caratrubellite, 21.92-carat citrine quartz, 17.98-carat amethyst, 16.71-carat morganite,16.09-carat Iolite, a 14.83-carat green quartz and a 5.21 carat apatite. These vibrant stones are complemented by rubellite and peridot beads, and pavé set diamonds.

Gübelin

This Gübelin masterpiece called Blushing Wing, which is characterised by its blush colour and design that resembles a bird’s feather, is set with a 12.10-carat cushion-shaped padparadscha sapphire from Sri Lanka, 120 sapphires in different shades and brilliant-cut diamonds. Much thought was put into selecting the pastel-hued sapphires, which were carefully coordinated to match the play of colours within the padparadscha sapphire that was set on red gold to further highlight the stone’s inner fire. The variety of cuts, colours and shapes seen in this piece harks back to Gübelin’s rich and glamorous creations from the 1950s and 1960s.

Chanel

The Weed Graphique necklace by Chanel hails from the French brand’s tweed-inspired high jewellery collection, Tweed de Chanel. Made in white gold and set with onyx and diamonds, including a 5.03-carat round-cut, the necklace realises the litheness and suppleness of handwoven Scottish woollen cloth through specially developed articulation techniques that enabled the craftsmen to mould precious metals and set gems while
maintaining the jewel’s fluidity.

Feng J

Last year, Phillips auctioned off a breathtaking necklace by Chinese jewellery designer Feng J called Jardin de Giverny. Featuring a 19-carat fancy light pink diamond, the necklace was inspired by Claude Monet’s The Artist’s Garden at Giverny and Feng J’s love for the romantic fountains of Paris. Feng J designed it as a garland, using her signature floating-set technique in which the precious metal is hardly — if at all — visible, in setting the numerous double rose-cut coloured sapphires, aquamarines, spinels, tanzanites and tsavorites and rose-cut and brilliant-cut diamonds she used for this piece. The rare fancy light pink diamond has pride of place as it sits at the very heart of the garland necklace.

Tiffany & Co

When you have a stone as magnificent as the 128-carat Tiffany Diamond, that’s all you need to make a spectacular necklace. The legendary rock, which, according to Tiffany & Co chief artistic officer Reed Krakoff, rarely makes a public appearance and usually stays inside its vaults, is an extremely rare fancy yellow diamond unearthed in 1877 as a 287.42-carat rough diamond from the Kimberley mines in South Africa, which was eventually procured by Charles Lewis Tiffany. In 1878, the rough diamond was cut in Paris into a 128.54 carat cushion shape brilliant with an unprecedented 82 facets, revealing the stone’s extraordinary fire and beauty. It’s graced the necks of Audrey Hepburn, who wore it at an event promoting Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and likewise by Lady Gaga, who wore it during a performance at the Academy Awards in 2019.

Boucheron

Claire Choisne, creative director of Boucheron, doesn’t disappoint with her 67-piece Contemplation high-jewellery collection, which is said to be her most personal and intimate yet. Taking on a sensory approach, Choisne invites the wearer to feel the sensations that come with these jewels. Case in point is this Goutte de Ciel necklace, on which she endeavoured “to capture what cannot be caught: a piece of sky to wear around your neck”. Boucheron’s two-year search for a material that could reproduce not only the sky’s infinite palette of blues, but also its fleeting, indefinable essence led to a special substance composed mostly of air and silica that’s used in space by Nasa to gather stardust, which Choisne then encloses in a shell of rock crystal set with diamonds and made into an extraordinary talisman that hangs from the choker.

Moussaieff

Famous for its inventory of incredibly rare fancy colour diamonds and precious stones, London-based Moussaieff Jewellers doesn’t fall short when it comes to jaw-dropping jewels. A stunning testament to this is this high jewellery necklace that features 68.99 carats of Colombian emeralds and 39.48 carats of diamonds, set in rock crystal. This astounding piece shows not only Moussaieff’s extraordinary access to precious stones of such quality, but also how the otherwise traditional jeweller is increasingly creating pieces that are more daring, creative and instinctive

Hermès

In a collection described by Hermès creative director for jewellery Pierre Hardy as one “oriented towards intimacy”, Lignes Sensibles was inspired by objects that are used to listen to the body, such as the stethoscope. Hardy uses a range of gemstones in colours close to skin tone, with the goal of creating pieces that, when worn, will be at “one with the skin”. A standout piece in the collection is this Contre la Peau necklace in rose gold that features an astounding 867 brilliant-cut diamonds totalling 45.3 carats. To weave this necklace, so to speak, so that it rests delicately on the contour of the neck like a second skin, minuscule triangles of gold were interlocked with chatons in which the diamonds are set, thus forming a fluid lace-like mesh.

Verdant Wonders: The Most Exquisite Jewellery With Green Gemstones

Green gemstones have long been treasured as symbols of rebirth and abundance across cultures.

Here, we single out eight scene-stealing, verdant jewellery pieces festooned with green gemstones.

Van Cleef & Arpels

green gemstones

The Merveille d’Émeraudes necklace from Van Cleef & Arpels is modelled after a significant piece from the maison’s history: a diamond collaret necklace with 10 drop-shaped emerald pendants acquired for Princess Faiza of Egypt in 1947. This tribute creation features five pear-shaped Colombian emeralds totalling 70.4 carats, and they are set on a collar constructed with gleaming ribbons of diamonds. It is also a transformable necklace – the emeralds can be detached and replaced with three pear-shaped diamonds; or the emeralds and diamonds can be attached to a pair of earrings that come with this necklace.

Cindy Chao

green gemstones

The Taiwanese jewellery artist honours her grandfather with the 2019 Black Label Masterpiece VII Emerald Architectural Necklace. The highlight here is a pair of emerald-cut Colombian emeralds weighing 100 and 99 carats respectively. They are held in place by a multi-strand necklace chain composed of 10,000 vivid green emerald beads. Lending an interesting contrast are diamonds in various cuts, rare pink conch pearls, blue sapphires, a yellow diamond and baguette-cut emeralds.

Dior

green gemstones

The Tie & Dior collection translates the striking designs and chromatic palettes created by the tie-dye technique into high jewellery pieces. A superb example is this set of mismatched yellow gold and platinum earrings featuring a hypnotic gradation of green hues. Each side bears a central tsavorite garnet weighing 2.87 and 2.81 carats respectively. Pistachio-coloured cultured pearls add unexpected texture; emeralds and tsavorite garnets in various cuts enhance the colour intensity; and 197 white round diamonds impart brilliance.

Cartier

This white gold Orpheis necklace from Cartier's [Sur]naturel high jewellery collection showcases an exceptional 53.94-carat rectangular Zambian emerald cabochon that resembles a serpent’s head and inspired the design of this creation. Featuring an intense blue-green hue and hints of grey, the gemstone is lined with diamonds, including two larger rectangular-shaped ones totalling 5.42 carats and a 1.55-carat triangular-shaped piece right at the tip. Creating a snakeskin effect on the choker chain are diamonds and onyx triangles arranged in a staggered pattern.

Graff

green gemstones

Known for the unsurpassed quality of its emeralds, the British jeweller once again puts the spotlight on the gemstone with this elegant pair of tassel earrings. It features 182.85 carats of rectangular emeralds and perfectly polished emerald beads, as well as 6.67 carats of scintillating diamonds. What sets this statement piece apart is its fluidity and how it shadows the wearer’s movements, which are hallmarks of Graff creations.

Bulgari

This ornate Bulgari necklace from the Barocko high jewellery collection captures the grandeur and artistry of the Roman Baroque period. Set in platinum, it flaunts a central octagonal Colombian emerald of 7.45 carats and another 184 buff-top emeralds weighing 6.78 carats. Adding intense sparkle along the length and fringes of this collar-style necklace are a 1.55-carat pear- shaped diamond, 48 round brilliant-cut diamonds weighing 22.1 carats and pavé diamonds totalling 9.34 carats.

Chopard

green gemstones

The Swiss jeweller turned to nature for its Red Carpet Collection 2020. Resembling a rambling garden of lush green foliage is this standout necklace set in Fairmined-certified ethical white gold and titanium. The drop pendant is a stunning 23.76-carat black opal cabochon, which is surrounded with topazes, tourmalines, sapphires, tsavorites and diamonds. Also flaunting a chain composed of 603.9 carats of emerald beads, this creation is a sight to behold.

Harry Winston

green gemstones

New York’s famed St. Patrick’s Cathedral – located in close proximity to Mr Winston’s atelier – was the source of inspiration for the Cathedral necklace. Showcasing five pear-shaped Colombian emeralds with a combined weight of 65.63 carats, the piece mirrors the perfect proportions and architectural elegance of the impressive neo-Gothic building. Highlighting the majesty of the central stones are 122 pear-shaped, baguette and marquise diamonds totalling 46.83 carats.

The Most Beautiful Nature-Inspired Jewellery Pieces in 2020

Mother Nature is a muse that never goes out of style.

Jewellers are flexing their creative muscles by immortalising nature’s fleeting moments and interpreting them into abstract or realistic creations. Here are our favourite nature-inspired jewellery designs for 2020.

Tiffany & Co

nature-inspired jewellery

One of the 20th century’s most gifted artists, Jean Schlumberger is famous for spectacular bejewelled objects that reference flora and fauna. His genius is evidenced here in this platinum-set Baguette Fringe necklace from Tiffany’s latest high jewellery collection – Legendary Designs of Jean Schlumberger.

Inspired by the elegant fluidity of seaweed, this creation features the juxtaposition of angular lines and soft circles realised through the use of over 23 carats of baguette diamonds and round brilliant diamonds weighing more than 62 carats. This piece is crowned with an elegant blue sapphire clasp.

Van Cleef & Arpels

nature-inspired jewellery

The Tendresse Étincelante earrings are one of three recently released high jewellery pieces paying homage to creations that belonged to some of the maison’s leading patrons. Inspired by the Van Cleef & Arpels earrings gifted by Aristotle Onassis to Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis in 1968 as a wedding gift, this pair features, on each side, a blossoming corolla that unfurls around a precious pear-shaped diamond.

Set in white gold, they are completed by a pair of detachable pear-shaped diamond pendants. Cut from the same rough stone, both gems weigh a total of 20.21 carats.

Bulgari

nature-inspired jewellery

Barocko, the maison’s latest high jewellery collection, captures the magnificence and beauty of Rome’s Baroque period of artistic and architectural heritage. Recurrent elements of the iconography of the time, such as plumage (a symbol of hope and faith), take centre stage in this platinum-set Precious Feathers necklace. A regal 10.27-carat pear-shaped Colombian emerald steals the spotlight, while brilliant-cut diamonds accentuate it. Additionally, the pendant can be detached to transform the piece into a discreet choker.

Chopard

nature-inspired jewellery

Another conversation piece from Swiss jeweller Chopard’s nature-inspired Red Carpet jewellery collection for 2020 is this Swan ring, set in Fairmined- certified ethical 18k white gold. Intricately crafted in ceramic with diamond pavé wings, the lifelike birds cradle a stunning 9.1-carat white opal cabochon sourced from Mexico.

Cartier

nature-inspired jewellery

Nature is interpreted as an abstract blend of wilderness and fantasy in the Parisian house’s latest high jewellery collection, [Sur]naturel. One of the standout pieces is the white gold-set Tillandsia Necklace – named after a perennial flowering plant with exposed roots. A highlight here is a pair of rare oval-shaped beryls – weighing 83.23 and 81.09 carats respectively – that seem to hover above a lattice of pavé diamonds. The plant’s rosettes are presented in pink rutilated quartz, and yellow and earth-toned diamonds.

Harry Winston

Harry Winston's Water Collection is an elegant take on the forms of the precious element as it interacts with the natural world. Showcasing 53.98 carats of gleaming marquise and pear-shaped diamonds, the striking platinum-set River Necklace mimics the fluidity and flow of water cascading elegantly down the wearer’s neck.

Cindy Chao

The 2020 Black Label Masterpiece VI “Reflection Bangle” has two interpretations: Jewellery artist Cindy Chao’s reflection on her family heritage and the reflection of nature’s landscape on water. The creation draws inspiration from Impressionist art, capturing the moment when light hits the water’s surface. Seven bright non-heated Ceylon sapphires with hints of purple are stunningly reminiscent of Impressionist indigos. They are juxtaposed with rose-cut sapphires to create a mirror effect, while brilliant-cut and Fancy Coloured diamonds spread across the bangle evoke the imagery of rippling water.

Representing Chao’s family legacy is the central branch-like vein that features six flexible articulations, and is set with 1,500 yellow diamonds from light yellow to deep brown. Forged in 18k white and yellow gold, the piece dazzles with the brilliance of 1,881 stones weighing 321.79 carats.

Graff

The British jeweller’s latest Pavé Butterfly Collection reimagines one of its cherished motifs in creations that capture the delicate creature’s ethereal beauty. Set with 17.98 carats of diamonds, the necklace features butterflies highlighted by dazzling marquise diamonds. Their sculpted wings are accentuated by pavé diamonds that gleam with intense luminosity.

How De Beers is Leading the Way in Ethical Jewellery and Sustainability

de beers ethical

De Beers ensures that every facet of its business is conducted to the highest possible ethical standards.

When you buy a De Beers diamond, you can be certain not only of its unsurpassed beauty, but also of the sustainability of its journey from deep inside the ground.

De Beers’ diamonds are sourced from its own mines in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Canada, meaning it can guarantee their ethical provenance – but the company also goes above and beyond to ensure that every one of its diamonds has a positive impact, with a four-point commitment known as Building Forever that puts social responsibility at the heart of everything it does.

[gallery ids="211340,211335,211342"]

De Beers’ efforts to protect the natural world include setting aside 200,000 hectares for conservation: an area six times the size of its mining operations. Known as the Diamond Route, it includes eight nature reserves hosting endangered species in South Africa and Botswana. Among the species to have benefited from De Beers’ conservation programmes are elephants, rhinos, cheetahs and giraffes.

The company is also committed to supporting local communities in the regions that host its operations. Apart from providing plentiful employment opportunities, it also assists programmes that improve healthcare and education, as well as helping to diversify those regions’ economies by investing in local entrepreneurs – to date helping 700 enterprises and 7,500 individuals in Botswana and South Africa.

[gallery ids="211341,211349,211348,211336,211350"]

Gender equality is another cherished value for De Beers, and the company supports projects that provide women and girls with opportunities. It has pledged US$3 million since 2017 to UN Women, investing in more than 700 female micro-entrepreneurs in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa; and it has sponsored scholarships for more than 750 girls in South Africa and 20 from indigenous communities in Canada.

The company also insists on the highest ethical standards both in its own operations and across the value chain. It ensures every diamond is natural, untreated and conflict-free, and is responsibly sourced and produced, to the highest environmental and labour rights standards, microscopically branding them with unique identifier the De Beers Marque as a guarantee.

[caption id="attachment_211607" align="alignnone" width="994"]de beers The rough-to-polished journey of a 0.62-carat cushion-cut fancy intense purplish-pink diamond. (Image: De Beers)[/caption]

Those diamonds are among the most remarkable wonders of nature, formed inside the earth between 720 million and 3.5 billion years ago. Each of them reflects the conditions in which it was forged: South African diamonds are famous for coming in a rainbow of different colours; those from Botswana are found perfectly formed in the desert, while those from Namibia are similarly polished by the waters of the Orange River and the sea; and Canadian diamonds are found buried deep beneath the ice, and come with a naturally frosted surface.

But perhaps even more incredible is the journey they undergo in the hands of De Beers, which looks for the perfect alignment of facets and angles, transforming nature’s wonders into treasured jewels. The company’s expert diamond cutters search for the cut that will maximise the beauty of each stone, while De Beers’ commitment to traceability means that buyers can purchase them with peace of mind.

[gallery ids="211339,211332,211334,211333,211541,211540"]

Those diamonds are put to the most exquisite use in the brand’s high jewellery collections. They include Portraits of Nature by De Beers, inspired by the striking colours of wild creatures; Phenomena by De Beers, an ode to the mystique of water; Lotus By De Beers, which takes it cues from the serenity of the lotus flower; and Imaginary Nature, which explores a mythical world of natural wonders.

Chanel’s Exhibition is as Much a Stunning Homage to its Classics as it is a Shift From it

chanel jewellery

Chanel brings Place Vendôme to Hong Kong as it stages a brilliant display of spectacular pieces hailing from some of its most notable high jewellery collections.

For nearly two decades, Chanel by tradition would present a themed high jewellery collection once a year and in Paris, no less. It has grown to become a highly anticipated annual event – one that clients and journalists would fly from all corners of the world to see and experience, where the pieces are presented in a themed exhibition that would be a treat to the senses.

This year, as we’re unable to travel to Paris, Chanel brings a piece of the magical city to Hong Kong as it transforms a space at PMQ into Place Vendôme, the famed square Mademoiselle Coco Chanel crossed hundreds of times between her residence at the Ritz, to her high jewellery atelier at 18 Place Vendôme, and boutique and one-time home at 31 Rue Cambon.

Strewn within this imagined space that featured “French windows” overlooking the square’s famed bronze obelisk and lined by those charming Paris street signs, are spectacular pieces from some of its most iconic collections, including the 1.5 1 Camelia 5 Allures, L'Espit Du Lion, Café Society and 1932.

chanel jewellery

Discover some of the pieces that were featured at Chanel's aptly named exhibition, "18 Place Vendôme" – referencing to Chanel's high jewellery atelier – held last week. We begin with the 1.5 1 Camelia 5 Allures, a collection comprised of 50 jewels – 22 of which transformable pieces – offering the wearer a multitude of ways to wear them. It features Coco Chanel’s favourite flower, the camellia, which she adored for its austerity, geometric aesthetic and the subtle but elegant manner with which it complemented her clothing.

[gallery columns="1" size="full" link="file" ids="211397,211398,211399,211400,211401"]

Then there’s the L'Espit Du Lion, which pays tribute to Mademoiselle Chanel’s zodiac sign, Leo, and a city that’s captured her heart and spirits in more ways than one – Venice. The lion would come to adorn many of her creations – from buttons, bags to yes, jewels.

[gallery size="full" columns="1" link="file" ids="211402,211403,211404,211405,211406"]

To mark the 80th anniversary of the Bijoux de Diamants collection, Coco Chanel’s first foray into the world of jewellery, Chanel creates an 80-piece line named after the year she launched it: 1932. This exceptional collection draws inspiration from the many motifs and symbols that permeated Coco’s imagination – from constellations, comets, stars, to fringes, ribbons and feathers — which were crafted using a dreamy combination of white, yellow and black diamonds, blue and pink sapphires and of course, a generous helping of luscious pearls.
