TRAVEL GUIDE – OSLO

Oslo is Europe’s fastest growing capital city. The city is located at the innermost point of the Oslo fjord. Oslo offers accommodations for every price category, including hotels, hostels, guest houses and camp sites.

Where to Stay

I selected for you the 3 best Hotel in Oslo. The Grand Hotel :  It has been opened in 1874 and is one of the most famous hotels in Norway. The Grand Hotel is centrally located on Oslo’s famous main street Karl Johans gate, next door to some of the city’s best shopping and top attractions. The Thief : a distinctive, bold and timelessly elegant hotel at Tjuvholmen, and the first hotel in Oslo with direct access to the Oslo Fjord. The Scandic Holmenkollen Park: located more than 350 metres above sea level, offering unique views of the city and the fjord.

What to Do

If you’re visiting Oslo in winter as I did this time, why not to combine skiing and skating with shopping, food and culture oriented activities? There are definitely many attractions in Oslo and more than 50 museums.

You can enjoy the panoramic views of Oslo from the top of the Holmenkollen ski jump , visit the Royal Palace , have a fjord cruise and do not absolutely forget to visit the Oslo’s Opera House. The Opera House is located right at the harbour, with an angled, white exterior that appears to rise from the water. It invites its visitors to climb its roof and enjoy panoramic views of Oslo and its fjord, all around.

Getting around the city with public transport is easy and much cheaper than doing that by cab and you can find precious suggestions visiting travel websites such asGoEuro.

With over 50 bus routes and 6 tram lines, despite it is relatively small, the city is really well connected. Ticket prices start from around 30 NOK (3 € roughly) if bought in advance and 50 NOK (5€ roughly) if purchased on the day of the trip. Discovering the city by bike is also possible, with bike lanes and traffic lights for cyclists, Oslo is fairly bike-friendly, but be careful with the ice on the way. Renting a bike starts at around 80 NOK (8€) for 24 hours.

Where to EAT

Oslo’s countless restaurants and bars offer delicious food and drinks in a relaxed atmosphere. I have selected two restaurants that I tried and than I definitely recommend you. For a lunch with an amazing panoramic view of Oslo I recommend the Ekebergrestauranten : located in a historic functionalist-style building with stunning views of the city and the fjord. For a rather romantic dinner and a full immersion in the Norway traditions, I recommend the Engebret Café : located in a charming building from the 1700s, Café Engebret opened its doors for the first time in 1857, and is an institution in Oslo’s oldest restaurant area.

Oslo has everything from fashionable brands and large shopping centres to small niche boutiques selling unique and original products. Here some good tips:
Design and Interior : the Scandinavian design is well known and a sure excellence all around the world. You can taste it in the following boutiques: Norway Design, Pur Norsk, House of Oslo.

Luxury and Fashion: Visit the area surrounding upper Karl Johan and Egertorget is reknow as the city’s most exclusive shopping area.

Vintage and Second Hand: Markveien in Grunerlokka is the number one stop for vintage shopping. Fretex Unika is also in this area. Visit also Velouria Vintage, in Thorvald.

Souvenirs : Den Norske Husfliden and Heimen.

Shopping centres: Oslo City and Byporten
