Just weeks after their first public outing as an official couple, A$AP Rocky and Rihanna continue the barrage of huge couple fits. This week, they were in the Bronx, NYC filming a music video and bringing more big looks in the process. I mean the big part literally, too. Rocky was wearing a massive, neon green Ushanka hat.
The hat itself is wild, sure. But it’s the fact this ultra-fluffy accessory got put to use at all with the city’s 82F temperature in mind. This wearing of winter hats in summer isn’t an isolated incident, either. Far from it. There’s something going on.
We’re sticking with the world’s current favorite couple first — and I don’t mean Bennifer. Not to be outdone on the cold-weather headwear front, Rihanna was actually wearing something of a similar vibe during that aforementioned PDA — a bold pink faux fur hat by UK-based designer Emma Brewin.
Then there’s Tyler, the Creator. The rollout for his seventh album Call Me If You Get Lost has brought with it some ridiculously good visuals, all of which have seen Ty return to the Ushanka — a hat category he wore to the 2018 Grammys. There are multiple colorways at play, too, with “CORSO” featuring a sleek black Ushanka and “LEMONHEAD” and “WUSYANAME” featuring fire pink and brown options, respectively. He’s also worn the Ushanka out and about IRL, as seen on his IG stories. This isn’t just for selling albums.

The Ushanka, a flap-featuring headwear item of military origins, was designed to protect its user from the extreme temperatures of the Russian and Siberian winters. An odd choice for the middle of summer, no?.
Perhaps, but we’ve been building to this all-out application of full-on winter hats in summer for months now. Back in May, we told you that this summer would be one where the bucket hat was devoured by crochet. And we were right. From Bella Hadid to A$AP Nast, famous faces couldn’t get enough of the DIY knitted hat, while brands far and wide, from Prada to IG label Memorial Day, continue to add them to new collections. Again, not the most sun-ready material, but blowing up nonetheless.

Perhaps all of this is a natural consequence of how the past 18 months or so of our lives, and our resulting wardrobes, have played out. Loungewear and going out gear have become intertwined, clothes at the bottom of our closets have been rediscovered, and some fashion labels have even shunned the absurdities of the Fashion Week calendar.
