Caudalie x Harvard Medical School Premier Cru Collection

Expert skincare brand Caudalie has partnered with genetics professor Dr David Sinclair of Harvard Medical School to bring us the new Premier Cru Collection, which features patented TET8TM technology to remove signs of ageing, aiding the natural production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

That means slowing down worrying visible features like deep wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots while supporting your skin’s firmness, elasticity, and radiance. Like all its products, the line is clean with no endocrine disruptors, no irritants, no animal-derived ingredients and no non-biodegradable ingredients.

N°1 De CHANEL Red Camellia Revitalizing Serum

Chanel’s new No1 beauty collection is dedicated to a distinctive red version of founder Gabrielle Chanel’s favourite flower: the camellia. In particular, the skincare line features potent infusions of the red camellia, harnessing its anti-ageing and nourishing properties.

Our pick is the lightweight gel-texture serum, which works to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and pores, and improves skin elasticity. And the collection makes every effort to be more sustainable, with 30 percent less packaging as well as refillable products.

Estee Lauder Re-Nutriv Ultimate Diamond Transformative Brilliance Serum

From Estee Lauder, the Re-Nutriv Ultimate Diamond Transformative Brilliance Serum is a skincare gem (see what we did there?), made with a potent infusion of the brand’s exclusive Black Diamond Truffle Extract and Vitamin C to reveal brighter, more radiant skin that’s noticeably firmer and more supple.

More Than Skin Deep: Beauty Brands That Give Back

beauty brands that give back philanthropy charities

Shanyan Fok Koder and Richard Bassett explain how a Hong Kong art entrepreneur joined forces with a former special-forces soldier to launch a health and mental wellbeing app, Mentor360.

"Mental health and mental fitness are universal concerns," says Shanyan Fok Koder. "And regardless of your demographic, social status, your job or your age, it’s something everyone has to deal with."

Shanyan Fok Koder & Richard Bassett on Mental Health App Mentor360

Shanyan Fok Koder & Richard Bassett on Mental Health App Mentor360
Shanyan Fok Koder and Richard Bassett

The Mentor360 app dropped on World Mental Health Day in October, the cumulation of the last 20 months of work and conversations (usually across continents over Zoom) between former military man Richard Bassett and worldly art advisor Koder. A month later, I’m sitting with both in a North London café talking over slices of pizza.

Their app, they hope, offers everyone a holistic 360 guide and framework to “finding your formula” for mental and physical wellbeing. It uses a hybrid approach, with a core layer of clinicians and professional Mentors and then celebrity Ambassadors (who’ve publicly shared meaningful life stories) critical for building noise and momentum.

"I’d been in the military for a long time. And there were a couple of incidents in my life that made me want to create something," Bassett, the CEO, explains. "Firstly, it was my father committing suicide. Then my son had a bit of misdirection. And several of my friends in the military had PTSD issues or adjustment disorders."

"The biggest issue is why people wouldn’t come forward and say they’ve got a problem?” he asks.

“Unlike some apps, we’re not trying to get people hooked. Come on to it when you need it”

— Richard Bassett

The answer often lay in culture, lack of education or concerns about privacy that prevent many from seeking help. With that came Bassett’s idea of creating an app that functions as a “non-judgmental toolkit” with content validated by experts – who include coaches, performance psychologists, mental health-specialising nurses and a clinical psychologist.

Basset’s link with Koder came when his best friend, ex-special forces colleague and TV star Jason Fox, sat next to a pregnant Koder at a charity fundraiser for Born (which researches to prevent premature birth) in late 2019. As the pair talked about their passions for mental health and children’s wellbeing, the connection to Bassett’s idea became quickly apparent.

"Foxy told me that I have to meet his friend, Richard, who’s building this app," Koder recalls. "I was always wanting to support things that are very meaningful and close to my heart … and now Jason is actually our key mentor. The partnership between Richard and I was almost like two parts of a jigsaw puzzle come together."

Although some might go to the app for help with stress, trauma or even resources to help with suicidal feelings, Mentor360 is designed specifically as a three-dimensional offering that will also encourage fitness, workouts, performance and meditation or more clinical matters.

"We wanted to maintain the human factor as a constant throughout. So it feels like somebody has given you some advice rather than some process-driven machine learning," Bassett adds.

The Mentor360 app

The co-founders might come from two different worlds, but the unlikely partnership speaks to the ubiquity of the issues at hand. Bassett’s 25-year military career saw him being appointed the first ever Command Sergeant Major within the UK Special Forces military group. "It was at that stage where I was asked if I wanted to run defence,” he says. “At that point, I thought, I’ve kind of had my fill of the military now, it’s time to move on."

Koder meanwhile grew up in Hong Kong and the UK as the daughter of Li Ka-shing’s "right-hand man" Canning Fok, carving out a career in the arts and taking over her family’s impressive collection. As a female art entrepreneur and mother, her challenges would be different.

"When I had the misfortune of losing three babies to miscarriage and dealing with that emotional fallout, it led me to want to support this as a cause," Koder divulges. "If there’d been something like this app available to me, I don’t think I’d have suffered as much as I did emotionally. It’s a topic that’s still very taboo, even in this day and age … and while you eventually find your own community, at the very beginning, you do feel very alone."

Both were clearly driven towards the app through deeply personal experiences. Bassett saw first-hand how soldiers who’d done several tours in Iraq and Afghanistan suffered – his best friend, Fox, had left the forces with PTSD. Perhaps machismo or fear of institutional repercussions meant that the issue was often ignored or hidden in the military – but he hopes that Mentor360’s holistic approach can gently lead people to explore mental fitness alongside physical performance too.

The Mentor360 app

The male-female perspectives of the pair offer a well-rounded, powerful tool. And while the wellness space is already crowded, Mentor360 stands out by being so broad, human-focused and non-prescriptive.

There’s been exciting traction too. Since its launch, the app has been downloaded in more than 176 countries, with the UK, the US and Australia leading. British schools have reached out and it’s one governance board away from being trialled within the National Health Service (NHS), which means added clinical risk management in the app. That has been an important validation, says Bassett, "especially when an institution like that has picked it out from a huge spectrum of apps on the market today."

Covid-19 and lockdowns have helped throw light on mental health, taking the conversation more mainstream. The timeliness has hit home; as Bassett says, “there’s a lot of people now struggling with the transition between Covid and normality”.

Koder tells us that the plan is to serve individuals but also institutions such as the NHS and the military. There’s also the option of “white labelling” it, so the app can be packaged and tailored to certain industries or corporate employees. In the future, might they look more global, with different languages and translations? Absolutely, the pair say, but they’re taking it “slow and steady”. There’s been interest from American corporations and Koder says that she’s keen to push into Asia very soon. Although going truly global might mean translating for languages, cultures and tone, as well as working with diverse psychologists, it remains a future ambition.

Shanyan Fok Koder & Richard Bassett on Mental Health App Mentor360

Mentor360 may be extra helpful in cultures where mental health is still relatively taboo. As Koder says, "I think, coming from our Asian culture, it speaks volumes to me – so much of our culture is about still performance or hiding a lot of what you’re feeling."

"Unlike some apps,” Bassett adds, "what we’re not trying to do is create a hook or get people hooked. Come on to it when you need it, and if you don’t need it for a while because you’re good, you can just put it away … We’re starting to see those patterns in the trend analysis."

To get a little personal, I ask what works for them individually to keep a healthy mind and body. Bassett’s formula revolves around daily exercise, time with the family, dogs and good sleep – even the occasional glass of wine on the sofa in front of a crackling fireplace. Koder’s happiness hacks centre around motherhood, being content and at peace in her skin, and looking at life with a certain romanticism: "I always love to see the poetry in my day,” she says, "and I think it’s important to just pause throughout the day, check-in and acknowledge that I’ve achieved these things and I should be proud of myself, rather than just rushing on to the next thing."

10 Korean Celebrities Who Became Brand Ambassadors in 2021

Whether it is the audiences’ love for K-drama films and shows or K-Pop music, South Korean celebrities have captured the imagination of one and all.

Such is their ever-growing reach that the world's biggest luxury brands have turned to collaborating with some of the most famous Korean celebrities.

Here are ten Korean celebrities who became the face of some major brands this year:

Hyun Bin

The Korean heartthrob who starred in the hit Netflix series Crash Landing on You (2019-2020) became the first Korean celebrity to endorse the Italian luxury brand Loro Piana in September 2021.

“His social engagement towards humanitarian and environmental issues underscores the common values shared between himself and Loro Piana, making the partnership a natural decision,” the brand said in a press release. The actor will sport the brand’s upcoming fall/winter 2021-2022 collection, which will also include ready-to-wear items and accessories.

However, Loro Piana isn’t the only brand Hyun Bin is endorsing. He was made the first Asia-Pacific brand ambassador of Tom Ford Beauty in July 2021, and was featured in the brand’s Soleil Neige campaign.

In 2020, Hyun Bin became Swiss luxury watch brand Omega’s first Korean ambassador. He also featured on the January 2021 cover of Esquire Korea sporting an Omega watch.

Gong Yoo

The Train to Busan (2016) star, who also made a special appearance in Netflix’s most-watched series Squid Game (2021- ), was announced as Chanel Korea’s brand ambassador earlier in 2021. The actor will endorse the brand’s fine jewellery and watches.

In an exclusive photoshoot with Elle Korea, Gong Yoo made his first appearance flaunting Chanel’s J12 timepiece.

Gong Yoo also did a shoot for Marie Claire Korea, where he was seen wearing the J12 watch.

Nam Joo-Hyuk

Popular Korean actor Nam Joo-Hyuk, who stared in the Netflix series Start-Up (2020), became the brand ambassador of Dior Beauty Korea earlier in 2021. However, this wasn’t his first stint with the Maison.

In 2019, he was made the first Korean ambassador of Dior Men.

He will be promoting various Dior products, from perfumes to skincare and makeup, in his latest partnership with the brand.

Lee Dong-Wook

His flawless skin makes him the perfect choice for beauty and skincare product endorsement. Chanel tapped on him to endorse its first makeup collection for men — Boy de Chanel — in 2019 as the brand’s global ambassador.

In July 2021, he was chosen as La Mer’s male brand ambassador. The Goblin (2016) star made a breathtaking appearance in Elle Korea’s July issue to announce his collaboration with La Mer.

"Lee Dong-Wook's luxurious image and irreplaceable atmosphere fit well with the brand, so we chose him as the model," a brand representative shared with a South Korean media outlet, as per KDramaStars.

Kim Woo-Bin

The model-actor returned to spotlight this year after recovering from nasopharyngeal cancer.

He was spotted attending The Sound Maker exhibition in South Korea as the new brand ambassador of the Swiss luxury watch brand Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Speaking of the association, Woo-Bin said: "I’m very delighted to be a Friend of Jaeger-LeCoultre, with a long history of 188 years and great watchmaking expertise. I look forward to the new journey with Jaeger-LeCoultre."

Kim Soo-Hyun

One of the highest-paid actors in South Korea, Kim Soo-Hyun was made Tommy Hilfiger’s new brand ambassador.

“For days at home and working life leisure and work, Kim always looks to the future with a smile,” Tommy Hilfiger’s website reads.

The actor was seen adorning the brand’s Autumn 2021 menswear collection.

He was also chosen as Swiss watchmaker Mido’s Asia ambassador.

Lee Jung-Jae

While Lee Jung-Jae from the Squid Game fame preps for the upcoming season of the Netflix series, the Korean actor has caught the attention of one of the biggest fashion houses in the world. He was made the global brand ambassador of Gucci in November 2021.

A press release by Gucci said, "Lee Jung-Jae's charismatic and iconic style and a strong self-identity is similar to Gucci's philosophy that values acceptance of diversity and self-expression."

Another Squid Game star who has gained massive popularity after the show’s release is Ho-Yeon Jung. The model-turned-actress is now one of Louis Vuitton global ambassadors.

In an Instagram post on 6 October, 2021, the French luxury fashion house’s creative director Nicolas Ghesquiere wrote: “I immediately fell in love with HoYeon’s great talent and fantastic personality, and I am looking forward to starting this new chapter of the journey we started at Louis Vuitton a few years ago.”

According to the post, she had earlier walked the ramp for the brand and had also featured in a ready-to-wear campaign in 2017.

Sourced from Dolsongi Tea Garden, the oldest green tea garden on Jeju island in South Korea (and exclusive owned by Amore Pacific), the 34-year-old leaves are carefully selected before they're used in the Korean brand’s bestseller. The antioxidant properties of the green tea extract softens the skin instantly, and with prolonged use is moisturised and plumped. On top of that, the skin tone is evened out too. The best part though, is the scent, and the fact that it only takes 10 minutes of your day, twice a week.

Unlike other eye serums, this one is delightfully lightweight and absorbs instantly without leaving any sticky residue. To be used on its own or layered underneath an eye cream as a moisture barrier to lock in hydration. Hotel Review: Baccarat Hotel, New York

The Baccarat Hotel reimagines the elegance and perfection of the legendary French crystal maker into a luxury lifestyle destination in the heart of New York City. The first hotel of its kind, this unique boutique hotel is a small piece of paradise that rises above the busy streets of Manhattan.

[gallery ids="154904,154901,154903,154900,154905,154902,154907,154906"]

Location: 10/10

Situated in the heart of the city that never sleeps, the Baccarat Hotel is a stone’s throw away from some of New York’s ultimate attractions. Just steps away is the Museum of Modern Art, the glitzy shops of Fifth Avenue, the flashing lights of Times Square and Central Park, the world's most-visited urban green space.

Design: 10/10

Paris-based interior designers Dorothée Boissier and Patrick Gilles spent three years bringing the Bacarrat Hotel concept to life . The interiors are a mash up of 18th-century Parisian design and 21st-century aesthetics. The minimalistic design plays with spatial proportions and light throughout the property, from the flickering LED installation in the lobby to the refractions of light in the crystalware and 17 custom chandeliers to the reflective mirror surfaces -- all paying homage to the Baccarat brand.

Special mention: An easily overlooked yet very charming feature of the hotel is the library located in the Grand Salon. It houses 255 guestbooks -- one for each year since Baccarat's founding -- all in white (with the exception of 2015, the year the hotel opened) for visitors to leave their special mark and personalised messages.

Ambience: 9/10

One step inside the Baccarat Hotel and you'll be completely transported, forgetting that you're in the middle of Manhattan. An unassuming air of luxury radiates throughout the premises, and the space gives off a spacious grandeur with natural sunlight rushing through its floor to ceiling windows and bouncing off the countless crystal chandeliers and accents. The soft hues of wood flooring, hand-pleated silk walls, mirrored surfaces and marble finishings are lightened up with fresh bouquets of red roses (the signature colour of Baccarat) in every room, too.

Rooms: 8/10

New York and Hong Kong share quite a number of similarities, and enclosed spaces is definitely one of them. The standard room is on the smaller side and might be less than what you're accustomed to, but at least the use of the limited space is clever. Hand-painted French doors slide open to reveal a white marble bathroom with a glass wall providing an illusion of more space. A small seating area is pushed up against the window for enjoying views of the city. To add a special Baccarat touch of luxury, a custom-designed, red enamel mini bar offers hand blown crystalware and Ladurée treats alongside a range of premium beverages.

Service & Facilities: 9/10

The distinctive black-and-white marble indoor swimming pool, lined with luxurious four-post day beds, is a must-visit for guests of the hotel. Whether to relax or snap up some travel photos, this is a sweet spot to get away from it all. Right next to it is the hotel’s spa -- Spa de la Mer -- for those looking for pampering. Like its other locations, the ocean-inspired wellness retreat offers its guests bespoke treatments for the face and body -- all using La Mer products, of course.

Food & Drink: 8/10

With two Michelin-starred chef Gabriel Kreuther as the property’s Culinary Director, it’s safe to say that you’ll be properly fed at the Baccarat. However, due to the size of the hotel, the restaurant options are limited" You can choose to dine in the Grand Salon, at The Bar or, when the weather permits, outside on their open-air patio deck. In spite of the fact that there’s only one kitchen, the contemporary menu is substantial. Afternoon tea is headed up by the hotel’s tea sommelier and is by far the most popular dining experience offered here.

Rates: From US$945 (HK$7,380) for an Atelier King Room to US$18,945 (HK$147,917) for the Baccarat Two-Bedroom Suite. (Prices may vary depending on availability and season.)

Rating: 9/10

Perfect for: an indulgent getaway from the city, within the city.

Your Skincare Hero for Extreme-to-everyday Needs

Let everyday be a miracle with La Mer’s cult classic, The Concentrate.

There’s a million and one things that can affect your skin; from changes in season to extreme weather conditions, to stress, to pollution, so it’s hard to know what’s causing instability at any given moment or day. That’s why it’s essential to arm yourself with a skincare regimen that tackles any and all issues in one fell swoop.

La Mer’s The Concentrate has long been touted as a skin saviour, a must-have cult-favourite solution that utilises a super concentrated form of Miracle Broth, known for its extraordinary ability to soothe, strengthen and stabilise skin, no matter what it’s going through.

If La Mer’s Miracle Broth isn’t a part of your skincare lexicon, it’s time to add it to the dictionary: the brainchild of aerospace physicist Dr Max Huber was created after he suffered severe burns in the lab through the course of his work, and, inspired by the regenerative properties of giant sea kelp, used it to create an active complex that could soothe and smooth away any imperfections. He didn’t know it then but we certainly know it now, that this Miracle Broth would become one of the world’s most revered formulas.

Lab burns may not top most women’s list of skincare concerns, but The Concentrate is an intensive treatment that can get the skin through any type of trauma, whether it’s redness and irritation or simple inflammation, which is a key cause of premature ageing, and is brought on by some of modern society’s most unavoidable elements, whether it’s the sun’s punishing UV rays or free radicals that are everywhere in the air.

If your skin is fragile and lacks stability, The Concentrate also contains a special Stabilising Ferment, specially engineered to balance skin condition and restore its health and vibrance, as well as special barrier ingredients that act as a lipid “cellular cement”, protecting the skin with an extra layer of defence and increasing its invulnerability. The Concentrated Miracle Broth lies suspended within this breathable barrier, sinking into the pores slowly to repair and rebuild.

Its uses are basically never-ending, limited only by the imagination, whether it’s to soothe the skin as an everyday serum or to halt the appearance of stretch marks during pregnancy – or to even heal a burn as Dr Huber did so many years ago.
