Our Favourite Brightening and Hydrating Eye Creams

With surgical masks being compulsory for the foreseeable future, it’s time to really put some graft in to make sure our eyes — basically the only visible portion of our faces — continue to shine.

Eye creams are one of those finicky products that we tend to gloss over in our teens and twenties. So unnecessary; we’ve probably never experienced a wrinkle or crease in our lives. Suddenly, at the turn of the next decade, it’s all we can talk about. Does this eye cream contain retinol? Is it hydrating? It is de-puffing? Throw in the excessive straining of eyes at screens all day and — help! — a hint of crow’s feet has been detected.

Well, it’s time to accept fate and pay a bit more care to the most delicate part of our faces. Here are some of our favourites.

Hero image courtesy of Ani Kolleshi via Unsplash.

For a brand touted as producing the “Greatest Skincare of All Time”, we definitely sat up a little straighter when news of their new eye cream was announced. Lightweight and fast absorbing, this science-backed cream also comes encased in a gorgeous ceramic carrier which can be repurposed for whatever beauty or non-beauty related uses that may suit.

If you’ve been following our review sagas, you’ll know that we’ve previously preached about Dr. Barbara Sturm’s anti-aging line here, but just to reiterate, this super rich, glorious cream is a dream to use and oh-so-moisturizing.

Launched earlier this year, Caudalie’s Premier Cru line is an anti-ageing formulation a decade in the making. Vegan, fragrance-free and made of 97% natural-origin ingredients, this little tube packs a real punch with a cooling applicator for instant, brighter looking eyes.

For a brand that launches consistent hard hitters with their cosmetics, so it’s no surprise that NARS’ skincare line also delivers. This new gel formula treats both eyes and lashes to revitalize and refresh, locking in up to 60 hours of moisture and glow.

As with other Drunk Elephant products, one is able to mix a dollop of this smooth serum with a combination of their other products. Pro tip: For a cooling effect, leave the bottle in the fridge before use.

Laura Mercier’s new Skin Essentials collection introduces ten products for an effortlessly flawless face; the perfect canvas for make-up, or just leaving the house bare-skinned — whatever suits you best. The Illuminating Eye Cream is a serum comprised of gentle yet efficacious ingredients, including light reflecting violet pearls and caffeine-rich green coffee seed oil.

Review: Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Anti-Ageing Skincare Products

Listen to your doctor! Here's our review of some of our favourite skincare product from Dr. Barbara Sturm.

There's been a recent rise in skincare brands founded by medical professionals, and we're all here for it.

Dr. Barbara Sturm began her career as an orthopaedic surgeon where she then pioneered a treatment for joint ageing. Having always been fascinated by aesthetic medicines and treatment, her product lines focus on anti-ageing, skin rejuvenation and barrier protection.

With the unveiling of her first ever solo-counter in Lane Crawford IFC, we decided to take a peek at her best-sellers and bring home a few lotions and potions to test.

The Best At-Home Beauty Products to Get You Through Another Lockdown

Evelyn Choi — actress, model and influencer — shares fashion and beauty tips.

Evelyn Choi’s familiar face stares out from numerous advertising campaigns, magazine pages and social media posts. After first coming to prominence 14 years ago in the film Echoes of the Rainbow, alongside Simon Yam and Sandra Ng, she’s appeared in many TV shows and nearly a dozen films.

Her social media posts are peppered with makeup trends and tips, nods to designer brands, accessories, colourful dresses, jeans and frilly tops. She’s also known for mixing up designer gear with street chic, so we had to ask Evelyn Choi about all things fashionable – and the trendy young star obliged by doling out helpful advice, and her notions of fashion dos and don’ts.

Evelyn Choi, Actress-Model and Influencer

In Giorgio Armani

How has your fashion journey evolved?

I read a lot of fashion magazines and I check up on runway shows, but the most important part of my fashion journey has been the experience. My advice to others is simple: know yourself well and then you’ll know what kind of style suits your personality and shows the best of you.

Your Instagram feed is studded with tags for brands such as Gucci, Sacai, Miu Miu, Tods, Loewe and Giorgio Armani. Which are your favourites?

I don’t have a favourite brand or designer per se, as I think different brands have distinct features that make them unique. I enjoy and appreciate every individual designer.

Tell us about your accessories journey.

I like to wear the same accessories often, but style them differently each time. How do I choose a bag? Well, it’s quite funny: I use my wallet as a yardstick. Of course, I also see whether the bag goes with my jeans, as well as my little black dress. Quite a lot of people might opt for a signature look of a high-end brand, or a classic design. Somehow, I always end up liking new designs that encapsulate the brand spirit.

Would you be influenced by a model or celeb because they endorse a particular brand?

I usually decide for myself. A particular look or accessory might look good on a particular model, but not on me. That’s why they’re models. I believe different people have their own styles and qualities. Choose a style that matches you, not others.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CXnKaE8PC2N/

Knowing you influence young women, does it make you more conscious about what you wear and post on social media?

For sure. That’s why I always share my #ootd (Outfit of the Day), not just because I want to share my fashion but, more importantly, because I want to give girls tips on finding their own style.

Who are your favourite Asian designers and style icons?

Three people spring to mind: designers Jason Wu and Vera Wang, and model and influencer Kiwi Lee.

What’s a fashion oops you had – and what did you learn from it?

I must say, hip-hop style really isn’t my cup of tea. I tried wearing very oversized tops and low-rise wide jeans and ended up looking very short and with no shape. But I wouldn’t say this style is an “oops I made a mistake”, it’s just not for me. I just can’t pull it off like others can.

Are there shows you watch just for the fashion?

I must confess I really like reality shows that help and encourage new and upcoming designers, like Project Runway and Next in Fashion. It’s always good to see how they fight for their dreams – and you as a viewer can also learn how to view fashion from different perspectives. From fabric construction to window dressing, the journey of an outfit from the designer’s first sketch to the end product is fascinating.

Evelyn Choi, Actress, Model and Influencer
Wearing Chanel

If you were to go to the MET Ball, who would you wear?

Wow – I really don’t know what I’d wear. I guess I need to see what the theme was first – it really starts from there, as the theme sets the tone. What I’d wear for Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination would be very different from China: Through the Looking Glass.

How collaborative are you with stylists?

To be honest, I don’t usually work with stylists, as I like to choose outfits myself – though sometimes I’ll work with a stylist on commercials or magazine shoots. I respect all the stylists in Hong Kong – I think they’re very professional.

What do you always have in your makeup bag?

Lip balm.

Beauty trends have been leaning away from glamour and towards skincare and wellness. What are your skincare tips?

My tips for readers are easy: less is always more. Don’t try to put lots of stuff and product on your face if you’re worried about your skin. I always remind myself that my body needs water. Good skin comes from within, not externally, so for glowing and smooth skin, drink water.

Wearing Gucci

What’s your fashion advice for young girls – or boys?

You’re under no obligation to follow a trend. Maybe you can create your own instead.

The Top Shelf Beauty Products of 2019

We reveal our favourite beauty discoveries of the past year — find out what our go-to skincare brands are, make-up we never leave home without, where you’ll find us when we’re in need of a luxurious spa treatment, and what 2020 launches we’re excited about.

Favourite treatment

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Carol Joy London (@caroljoylondon) on

This one is a toss-up between a two-part treatment at W Hotel’s Bliss Spa – it included one of the best facials I’ve ever had, using Carol Joy London products, and a Saltability body massage using warm Himalayan salt stones – and the Bastien Pedicure at The Oriental Spa, which left my soles and toenails looking better than ever. If I could combine them all into one, it would be my dream treatment.

Favourite make-up brand

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Clé de Peau Beauté (@cledepeaubeaute) on

While most people can’t get enough of its award-winning Concealer, I’m a loyal fan of Clé de Peau Beauté for its powders, highlighters and always-on-point lipstick shades. The best is its limited-edition holiday collection, which this year includes my favourite radiance enhancing Refining Pressed Powder (HK$800) and a special Lipstick Cashmere (HK$480) in the bold shade of Red Passion.

Make-up item I can't live without

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Too Faced Cosmetics (@toofaced) on

I’m all about “less is more” when it comes to make-up, so I rarely apply a full face of foundation, powder, blush and so on. I prefer some strategically placed concealer, and this year my favourite was the new-to-Hong Kong brand Too Faced’s Born This Way Super Coverage Concealer (HK$225). A little bit goes a long way, and the buildable formula blends seamlessly.

The one beauty product I'm always hoarding

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Drunk Elephant (@drunkelephant) on

I can never seem to have enough lip balms, eyelash curlers and hand creams. I’m not loyal to any lip balms in particular but have been liking Drunk Elephant’s Lippe Balm (HK$145) since the brand arrived along with Sephora. Eyelash curlers are always the classic shu uemura (HK$150) or the travel ones from Sephora. And for my mitts, Sisley’s newly launched Restorative Hand Cream (HK$860) is my current fave for its rich-but-not-greasy texture.

Favourite beauty hack I learned

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Tata Harper Skincare (@tataharperskincare) on

I think I was late to the game on this one, but I have Tata Harper to thank for introducing me to multi-masking. It makes perfect sense using dierent masks – at the same time – for dierent areas of the face. Now I use a clay mask on my T-zone, a hydrating mask on my cheeks and sheet masks under my eyes. Three masks in one, and I’m done in 15 minutes.

Favourite overall beauty discovery

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Royal Fern by Dr. Timm Golueke (@royalfernskincare) on

I’m not sure if it was the fact that I stumbled upon it unexpectedly or that it ended up being so simple yet so good, but my favourite discovery this year was Royal Fern. Founder Dr Tim Golueke’s visit to Hong Kong popped up in my Instagram feed and a few hours later I was introduced to one of the hottest – but still under-the-radar – skincare brands from Germany. Even now I use the cream and ampoules on a regular basis.

The brand I'll always be loyal to

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by La Prairie official account (@laprairie) on

I can always count on La Prairie to come out with effective and divinely luxurious products season after season. Its in caviar was one of the first luxury skincare collections I really fell in love with and this year it introduced the Skin Caviar Eye Lift (HK$3,990). Even the loose powder (HK$1,800) and make-up brushes (HK$1,080) it recently released are among my must-haves.

Favourite skincare product

A post shared by The Ordinary, NIOD, & more. (@deciem) on

It’s so hard to choose just one, but at least with The Ordinary’s Niacinamide 10% Zinc 1% (HK$80) I know I’m in good company. I was told the brand sells one of these serums every 30 seconds, thanks to its ability to balance sebum, fight blemishes and brighten skin tone. Add to that the quickly absorbed formula and affordable price point, and I’m sold.

Favourite haircare product

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Oribe (@oribe) on

This is another one that was introduced by a brand representative during their visit to Hong Kong. Oribe makes ultra-luxurious beauty and haircare products and devices. Its Gold Lust collection — comprising a shampoo, conditioner, hair mask and hair oil — not only smells divine but hydrate and smooth like no other.

Favourite beauty personality I met this year

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Isamaya Ffrench (@isamayaffrench) on

So many amazing people visited Hong Kong this year – including Tata Harper, Priscilla Ono, Peter Philips and Barbara Sturm – but my favourite was Isamaya Ffrench. The London-based “beauty exec” made her debut as Christian Louboutin’s first-ever global make-up artist here in Hong Kong, and it was the first time I saw anyone use mascara in red, no less as eye shadow and fishnet stockings to apply make-up. No wonder she started out face painting at children’s parties.

Favourite beauty device

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by CHA LING L'Esprit du Thé (@chalinglespritduthe) on

Give me a gua sha and I’ll happily massage the day away. It can be rose quartz or jade, smooth or ridged, as long as it helps with lymphatic drainage. When I have time, I also love the Cha Ling Ba Guan (HK$320). The at-home cupping device is perfect for tackling stubborn fat and cellulite.

Favourite beauty-related social media to follow

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Into The Gloss (@intothegloss) on

I think I’ve cycled through just about every make-up artist, #skincareaddict and wellness guru that’s out there. I’ll always be loyal to @intothegloss for its BFF approach, but lately I’m enjoying the somehow hypnotic nail art by Allure editor-in-chief @heymichellelee. I’ll probably never have the patience for nail art, so looking at her feed is the next best thing to getting a manicure myself.

Favourite Fragrance

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Miller Harris (@millerharris) on

There seemed to be a new fragrance released every week, if not every day, this year. A number of brands also opened stores in the Fragrant Harbour, particularly at K11 MUSEA, including Miller Harris. After trying out its fragrance profiling, I settled on the Lost in the City (HK$1,440) and have been enjoying wearing it ever since. I also have to give a shout-out to Louis Vuitton, which had a few winners this year too — my favourite being the California-inspired Cactus Garden (HK$2,050).

Favourite Bodycare Product

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Bamford (@bamford) on

Bamford burst on to the Hong Kong beauty scene late in the year, and was an instant hit with its all-natural, wellness-focused approach. Its B Silent Organic Body Oil (HK$400) is my favourite of the entire line thanks to its relaxing scent (from chamomile, lavender and vetiver root oils) and healing properties.

The next product I can't wait to get my hands on

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Angela Caglia Skincare (@angelacagliaskincare) on

Angela Caglia, of Rose Quartz Facial Goddess fame, recently released an Anti-Pollution Cleansing Oil (which she teased during her visit in September). I love her less-is-more approach and can see this becoming a favourite alongside her Detox Serum (HK$625) and Soufflé Moisturizer (HK$547) – not to mention the Vibrating Rose Quartz Sculpting Roller (HK$1,530) I use with them. I might have to throw in a few of her sheet masks too (HK$455).

The Beauty Products We Loved This Year

We reveal our favourite beauty discoveries of the past year -- find out what our go-to skincare brands are, make-up we never leave home without, where you'll find us when we're in need of a luxurious spa treatment, and what 2020 launches we're excited about.

Chantecaille's Rose de Mai Signature Facial is a big drink of goodness to quench your skin's thirst. Every visit is an opportunity to catch up on zzzs and I wake up to plumped, glowy skin. Plus, the delicate scent is reason itself to love this treatment.

Walking into Charlotte Tilbury makes me feel like a kid at a candy shop. The legendary makeup artist is the queen of colour. Her glamorous eyeshadow palettes are highly pigmented and easily blendable and buildable. To top it all, all her products are so beautiful in her signature modern-boudoir packaging.

Having gone under the knife earlier this year (and by that, I mean microblading), I was ready to shake my brow make-up dependency. But shu uemura hard formula pencil (a combination of powder, wax and semi-solid oil; HK$200) will always have a spot on my top shelf. I still use it when I want extra definition.

Masks. Be they sheet, mud, gel, peel-off or sleep. Following any masking routine, my skin feels fresh and renewed. My top-shelf products I use on rotation include WEI's Lotus Blossom Thirst Relief Sheet Mask (HK$430/6 sheets), Apivita's Prickly Pear Moisturising & Soothing Mask (HK$245) and Fresh's Umbrian Clay Purifying Mask (HK$490).

A post shared by TATCHA Beauty (@tatcha) on

I've started to exfoliate once or twice a week after workouts. Sweat opens your pores so you can get a deeper cleanse and rid all impurities this way. I can control the cleanse with Tatcha's The Rice Polish Calming (HK$600) and add more or less water depending on the exfoliation I need.

A post shared by Valmont Official Account (@valmontcosmetics) on

So much has launched in 2019. But my favourite find has to be the Valmont Teint Majestuex Satin Glow Foundation (HK$1,650). What I love most about it is that it's a hybrid between make-up and skincare offering a glowy satin-like finish without drying out the skin. It also works great with the Poudre de Teint Précieuse compact powder (HK$1,380) when I need to touch up on too much shine.

Brand I'll always be loyal to

When it comes to Canvas, I can find no fault. All its products are at least 90 percent natural and organic, so I can rest easy knowing they won't irritate my very sensitive skin. I'm especially fond of the Rose Otto collection.

Favourite skincare product

A post shared by Sunday Riley (@sundayriley) on

Depending on when you ask me this, my answer will probably change. But I'm currently obsessing over Sunday Riley's Luna Sleeping Night Oil (HK$450). A winning combo of retinol and blue tansy, the oil works through the night to reduce fine lines, the appearance of pores and redness. I also like that the formula is grease-proof and absorbs into your skin (rather than your pillowcase).

Favourite haircare product

A post shared by ghd Hong Kong (@ghdhairhk) on

I'll be the first to admit that I'm guilty of negligence when it comes to my hair. I find a good quality hairdryer is more than half the battle. The ghd Air Hairdryer is fast-drying, controls frizz and ives my fine lifeless hair a boost of volume.

Favourite beauty personality I met this year

A post shared by Angela Caglia Skincare (@angelacagliaskincare) on

Meeting Angela Caglia during her visit for her brand's launch at Lane Crawford in Hong Kong was rather memorable. She's made a name for herself by creating such beautiful, easy-to-use and effective tools. I've been hearing about her for some time now, so finally meeting her face-to-face and trying out her line was a real treat.

Favourite beauty device

Face massages helps to stimulate collagen production, plus it's relaxing when you're just sitting in front of the TV or computer. Frame Cosmetics has a Thermal Vibration Face Massaging Device (HK$4,680), which has a heating and cooling effect on top of a pulsating function that's said to help penetrate serums into deeper layers of the skin. All it takes is about 10 minutes and you've got yourself a mini at-home facial.

@gelcream posts the most beautiful product shots and honest reviews about new products. The only downside is that it will guarantee Instaenvy. Everything you find here will somehow make its way on to your wish list.

Favourite Fragrance

A post shared by Gucci (@gucci) on

I've always been a sucker or oral fragrances and my current favourite is Gucci Bloom Acqua Di Fiori (HK$1,040). The white-floral bouquet scent reminds me of fresh cut flowers without the overpowering sweetness, thanks to its earthy undertones.

Favourite Bodycare Product

A post shared by Aesop (@aesopskincare) on

I would recommend the Aesop body range to anyone regardless of their skin type. The cleansers are gentle on the skin thanks to the nourishing botanical ingredients and are suitable year-round. Its Geranium Leaf Body Cleanser (HK$325) and Body Scrub (HK$260) are my top choices -- the fresh pine-needle and sage scent really wakes me up.

It would be impossible for me to list them all as there are so many products on my wish list! But I will say that I've been eyeing the 111Skin Rose Gold Radiance Booster (HK$895) and any of its masks for some time now. If it's good enough for Margot Robbie, Kim Kardashian and Priyanka Chopra, I can live with it. I've also heard some great things about the Dr Barbara Sturm Calming Serum (HK$1,930) and Victoria Beckham by Augustinus Bader (HK$2,100) that I wouldn't mind trying out too.

8 Gentle Skincare Soothers for Sensitive Skin

It’s all fun and games when we try out new skincare and beauty products... until something goes wrong. And despite how much you love the way something feels or smells, there is no one-size-fits-all item, formula, or routine, out there. However, it will come as a relief to your sanity, and your skin, that a holy grail does exist for every skin type. No matter how sensitive.

Whether you’ve tried a product that wasn’t quite suited for your skin concerns or you’ve just landed from a long-haul flight, or you’re going through those few days of the month when you’re especially susceptible to shit that goes on – you have your delicate moments.

We’ve handled with extra care when trying out products with the sensitivity claim (so you won’t have to), to come up with a list of eight skin-safe formulas promising zero irritation, breakouts, dryness and inflammation.

1. Aesop: Seeking Silence Facial Hydrator

[caption id="attachment_171524" align="alignnone" width="3746"] Aesop Seeking Silence Facial Hydrator (HK$415)[/caption]

The latest addition to the Australian brand’s skincare range is Aesop’s first hydrator specifically designed to soothe, calm and bring comfort to sensitive skin. Thanks to antioxidant actives like ginger root which acts as an anti-inflammatory agent; Bisabolol (an ingredient extracted from chamomile) which promotes the skin’s own healing process; and squalene which helps to condition the skin and replenishes our moisture barrier to make sure all the goodness is locked in. The woody, herbaceous fragrance is the final cherry on top.

How to use: apply morning and evening after cleansing and toning. Gently massage into the face and neck.

2. Derm Institute: Anti-Oxidant Hydration Serum

[caption id="attachment_172506" align="alignnone" width="800"] Derm Institute Anti-Oxidant Hydration Serum (HK$1,000)[/caption]

Medical skincare experts, Derm Institute introduces its new and improved Anti-oxidant Hydration Serum. The reinvented formula delivers even higher efficacy than proven previously with an infusion of seven powerful natural antioxidants (including Malpighia fruit, white tea, grape seed) to repair and protect, and nano-gold for a surge of intense hydration, the advanced formula nourishes the skin by replacing lost moisture and collagen depletion. Its Super Hydration Complex (hyaluronic acid and ceramide complex) retains 1,000 times its weight in water acting like a moisture magnet so skin is plumped, smoothed and radiant.

How to use: apply after toner and follow with lotion or cream for complete hydration.

* Derm Institute’s new Anti-oxidant Hydration Serum will hit shelves in November, 2019

3. Dr. Barbara Sturm: Anti-Pollotion Drops

[caption id="attachment_171529" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Dr. Barbara Sturm Molecular Cosmetics Anti-Pollution Drops (HK$990)[/caption]

It’s been a while since we’ve been blessed with German skincare scientist Dr. Barbara Sturm’s magic without trekking all the way to her spas in New York and Dusseldorf. While we get familiar with Molecular Cosmetics – her skincare line that has quickly gained a top shelf status, we stumbled upon her Anti-pollution drops. Two to three drops of this serum does the magic – protecting and promoting the skin barrier, combating the oxidation caused by pollutants and harmful UV, and shielding your skin from external stressors. The marine microbe extracts are responsible for neutralising airborne heavy metals while cocoa seed extracts fight against signs of digital ageing caused by blue light from our electronics – and we know all too well that there’s no exception and we’re all guilty of that.

How to use: dispense a full pipette in the palm of your hand and apply to face, eye and neck area using a gentle patting motion after cleansing.

4. First Aid Beauty: Ultra Repair BarriAir Cream

[caption id="attachment_171530" align="alignnone" width="1200"] First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair BarriAir Cream (HK$275)[/caption]

The best offence is a good defence, and as the brand and product name suggests, this good-for-all hydrating soufflé-textured cream helps to strengthen the skin’s protective outer layer when it has been compromised by harsh products and the environment. The lipids within bio-mimic the natural composition of the skin to help fortify and resume its healthy state. This airy cream is packed with hyaluronic acid to help stimulate and replenish moisture, colloidal oatmeal and antioxidant-rich vitamin E to calm, soothe and condition, and ceramides to strengthen the skin’s barrier.

How to use: apply daily in the AM and PM, and evenly over a clean face or following a serum.

5. Helena Rubinstein: Hero Re-PLASTY Age Recovery Night Cream

[caption id="attachment_171535" align="alignnone" width="1575"] Helena Rubinstein Hero Re-PLASTY Age Recovery Night Cream (HK$3,300)[/caption]

Known as the Black Bandage, Helena Rubinstein’s new evening skincare envelops damaged or concerned skin to help accelerate its recovery. Using medical technology to fuse together hyaluronic acid for hydration and glycyrrhizic acid with anti-inflammatory properties, reducing flaking and restoring suppleness to bring the repairing qualities of a band-aid. The derm-active blend is cold-pressed and Pro-Xylane is added to create that signature velvety yet featherlike bandage texture. The night cream is especially effective when worn overnight as the skin cells are regenerating, so you can wake up with nourished skin.

How to use: apply every evening to perfectly cleansed skin. Apply over the face avoiding the eye contour.

6. Omorovicza: Cashmere Cleanser

[caption id="attachment_171537" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Omorovicza Cashmere Cleanser (HK$500)[/caption]

Cleansing is the most crucial part of your routine (and if it’s not, it should be!). But nothing will leave you more paralysed with fear than stripping away all the good along with the bad when it comes to washing your face – and this is especially true for sensitive skin. The search for a powerful yet gentle cleanser probably ends with Omorovicza. Formulated for ultra-sensitive skin, this cleansing milk contains calendula extract with anti-inflammatory properties, apricot kernel oil rich in vitamin A and E to promote collagen production, shea butter to boost lipids. Say goodbye to daily grime and hello to your wonderfully clean and balanced fresh face.

How to use: apply daily to damp skin. Massage well, then rinse thoroughly.

7. RéVive: Masque de Glaise

[caption id="attachment_171539" align="alignnone" width="600"] RéVive Masque de Glaise (HK$1,100)[/caption]

You’ll know all too well that clay masks are a no-no for temperamental skin. Though it can be clarifying, it is extremely drying. But before the thought sends you running in the opposite direction, take our word that this one’s a keeper. The delicate formula is said to clear impurities, tighten, lift, and to our surprise, hydrates. After letting it settle and harden on your face, the mask hardens and once washed off, the lines on your face are ironed out and instead of that tight dryness you’d normally feel after a mask, you’re left with radiant and supple skin. At the end of the day, because it is purifying, don’t overdo the frequency of use and follow up with other hydrating products every time to maintain that supple plump.

How to use: Apply once to twice weekly. Put on liberally (at least 1/8 inch layer on cleanser skin) and leave for 15 to 20 minutes until mask hardens. Rinse well. Follow with serum and moisturiser.

8. Tatcha: The Indigo Cream

[caption id="attachment_171541" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Tatcha The Indigo Cream (HK$1,090)[/caption]

There’s obvious credibility when you know something has a history that goes back two centuries. Taking beauty secrets from rediscovered Japanese manuscripts, Tatcha has built a strong cult following for its ancient recipes for the modern world. Designed especially for sensitive skin is the Eastern beauty brand’s Indigo cream, which promises that it’s so gentle that it can offer relief to even conditions like eczema, dermatitis, rosacea and allergies. The velvety texture is luxuriously cushiony, providing instant relief and comfort to the skin. Its natural Japanese Indigo extract calms and soothes irritated skin; Colloidal Oatmeal relieves itching, subdues redness and seals in moisture; while Sophora Japonica (extract from white flowers) pumps the skin with moisture.

How to use: massage a pearl-sized amount gently onto face, neck and décolletage in upwards strokes. Use daily, morning and night.

7 Steps To Achieve Glass Skin, The K-Beauty Comeback Trend for Summer

It’s no secret that we (and the rest of the world) look towards the beauty capital that is South Korea for our skin goals. And when the masters of skincare came up with the “glass skin” trend -- an almost translucent complexion and luminous glow that seems to radiate from within -- a few years back, we were hooked. This season, it's returned in a big way. After all, who doesn’t want a gleamingly clear, poreless, dewy complexion?

So for those of you that are ready to get on board, here’s our step-by-step guide to achieving glass skin:

1. Double Cleanse

It all starts with a clean canvas. Beautiful skin is healthy skin, so hygiene is top priority. Begin with an oil cleanser that dissolves away impurities and stubborn makeup. Valmont’s Wonder Falls is a cream-melt-to-oil formula and gets the job done without stripping your face of moisture. Part two involves a water-base product like Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Enzyme Cleanser that ensures any residue or oil from part one is taken care of. The powder format allows you to blend your own concentration depending on your skin’s condition and specific needs.

2. Mask

What Glass Skin requires is hydration. Be it sheet masks (Tatcha Luminous Deep Hydration Lifting Mask), wash off masks (Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask) or leave-in overnight masks (Laneige Water Sleeping Mask) — make sure to overindulge your skin with moisture, or better yet, drench your skin in nutrients for that luminous glow.

3. Tone

Preferably choose something with a brightening element to it. Look for ingredients such as Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, and Rose Water. Layer on Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Facial Toner or Guerlain Orchidée Impériale The Essence-in-Lotion so your skin can soak in all the moisture for that plump and supple look.

4. Moisturise

Moisturise lots! Unlike makeup, when it comes to moisturising, more reallyis more. Keep in all the goodness with a moisturiser that works for your skin type and your environment. Here in Hong Kong, you’re going to want a light formula (like First Aid Beauty Coconut Water Cream or Helena Rubinstein Prodigy Cellglow The Radiant Regenerating Cream) that won’t clog your pores. Remember you want glassy, not greasy.

[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-418.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-413.jpg" right-caption="First Aid Beauty Coconut Water Cream" left-caption="Helena Rubinstein The Radiant Regenerating Cream"]

5. Protect

Nothing damages the skin more than UV, regardless of the weatherman’s prediction for sunny, overcast or thunderstorm days. A good offence is a good defence so an SPF barrier is a must. For our climate, SPF50 is a good benchmark. Similar to your moisturiser, pick something airy like Derm Institute’s Cellular Brightening Daily Defense SPF50+ or Sofina Super Moisture UV Cut Emulsion SPF 50+.
[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-411.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-410.jpg" right-caption="Derm Institute Cellular Brightening Daily Defense" left-caption="Sofina Super Moisture UV Cut Emulsion"]

6. Colour correct

Be careful in what you select, as not all products are going to work for the glass look. Clearly, avoid any matte formulas, and turn to water-based formulas such as NARS Sheer Glow Foundation. A play on light can help to accentuate the glow, so an illuminating highlighter (like Charlotte Tilbury’s Goldgasm) on the cheekbones, brow bone and cupid’s bow can amplify the glossy glow.
[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-415.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-414.jpg" right-caption="Charlotte Tilbury Goldgasm" left-caption="NARS Sheer Glow Foundation"]

7. Mist

For an extra boost (and a lot of sheen), seal in everything with a facial mist. This is also going to be your skin’s pick-me-up throughout the day, so keep a small bottle ready for when the slightest signs of dulling begin to appear (Aesop’s Immediate Moisture Facial Mist or Estée Lauder Micro Essence Aquaceutical Mist).
