Review: Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Anti-Ageing Skincare Products

Listen to your doctor! Here's our review of some of our favourite skincare product from Dr. Barbara Sturm.

There's been a recent rise in skincare brands founded by medical professionals, and we're all here for it.

Dr. Barbara Sturm began her career as an orthopaedic surgeon where she then pioneered a treatment for joint ageing. Having always been fascinated by aesthetic medicines and treatment, her product lines focus on anti-ageing, skin rejuvenation and barrier protection.

With the unveiling of her first ever solo-counter in Lane Crawford IFC, we decided to take a peek at her best-sellers and bring home a few lotions and potions to test.

Burn, Baby, Burn: The 6 Best Candles to Buy This Season

Ooh, we're digging the breeze. The pastel sunsets. The beauty of walking out of an office building and not being absurdly, immediately, utterly drenched in sweat. Is it too soon to cheer on this splendid weather? We certainly don't think so — and we're marking the occasion by lighting a candle or two to welcome this new season.

Penhaligon's

A set of 4 votive candles (HK$670)

Released as part of their festive collection, step into Penhaligon's fragrance factory where candles flicker in fours.

The set includes 35g candles with earthly, blissful scents that include Maduro Leaf, Comoros Pearl, Anbar Stone and Roanoke Ivy.

WOODCO

Casanova (HK$380)

Founded by a local mother-and-daughter duo, WOODCO features hand poured, small batch coconut wax candles. They've been making a name for themselves with various collaborations since their launch.

Their fall series sees scents that are toasty, spicy and warm; excellent for night time rituals.

Loewe

Candlestick shaped candle, various scents (HK$900)

Nothing says "best dinner host" like having a centrepiece with candles shaped like... well, candlesticks.

For the Spanish luxury fashion house's first-ever homeware collection, they've snared our favourite, most nostalgic garden bouquets to complement any dinner setting. Scents include Tomato Leaves, Juniper Berry, Coriander and even Liquorice.

Rituals

The Ritual of Sakura (HK$225)

Oh, boy, do we have a soft spot for anything cherry blossom-themed. The Ritual of Sakura home collection also includes fragrance sticks and refills, with their new packaging being more sustainable and easier to recycle.

For us, the delicate marriage of blossoms and rice milk is the ultimate fragrance for a chilly afternoon.

Boy Smells

Cedar Stack (HK$330)

Eco-friendly and cruelty-free brand Boy Smells is here to refresh your home essentials with a 'genderful' attitude.

Cedar Stack, their best-selling scent, carries notes of cedar chips and dried tobacco, interwoven with notes of peppercorn and dried ginger — close your eyes, and you could almost imagine yourself in a dreamy cabin far, far away.

BeCandle

Vase Candle: BeCandle x The Grey Green (HK$2,500)

For the realists of the world; the practical minds with a keen aesthetic; the worldly, passionate souls who seek something a little other.

This stainless steel vessel showcases two sides, literally and figuratively. You'll be able to choose from two types of fragrances — The Foggy Dew, an iris and cardamom concoction, or After Rain, a lighter raspberry and basil mix. Perfect for gifting, or as a dramatic focal point in the apartment.

Given the hectic nature of our daily lives - not to mention the extreme circumstances we’ve found ourselves in for more than a year - indulging in a visit to a beauty salon or spa hasn’t been easy. That's why the beauty industry’s current “tech-celeration” trend and the proliferation of gadgets in the beauty industry are both much-needed and very welcome. In fact, with so many new gizmos on the market, it’s never been easier to find the right one for you, whatever your requirements or concerns may be.

JOYCE Beauty, Hong Kong’s ultimate luxury beauty destination, offers a unique selection of devices, each promising professional-level treatments and results – all in the comfort of your own home. These smart beauty gadgets are guaranteed to transform your entire beauty regime, giving you not only complete control over your routine but also the best skin and hair ever.

This month, part of the JOYCE Beauty counter at Lane Crawford ifc will be transformed into the Gadget Bar – a repository of the most inventive and up-to-date devices for face, body and hair. Here’s our own pick of what’s on offer.

LYMA

JOYCE Beauty Gadget Bar Beauty Devices at Lane Crawford ifc
The LYMA system starter kit comes with an active mist and priming serum and a light therapy laser that's safe for at-home use

Lyma is a beauty brand that combines science, nature and technology to help you look and feel your best. The ground-breaking beauty brand has introduced the world's most powerful, transformative, portable skin-renewal system that uses laser-based light therapy, which was formerly available only at a clinic. Now, you can have it at any time you like.

From active acne and scarring to sagging skin, unwanted texture, rosacea, wrinkles and cellulite, this laser delivers never-seen-before results.

After just 15 minutes of daily use, your skin won’t just improve but be transformed. Originally developed as a medical laser to heal injury, this at-home and completely safe light therapy eliminates surface bacteria, delivers deep cellular regeneration and hydration, and uses oxygen to improve the skin’s texture.

With zero damage to the skin and no need for goggles, a 500mW near-infrared laser such as this has never been so easily accessible; totally pain-free, it’s completely safe to use at home.

At HK$20,999, the Lyma System Starter Kit also includes a 30-day supply of LYMA Active Mist and a Lyma Priming Serum – a special three-step system to give you the best results. The laser is also compatible with any oil and serum products available at JOYCE Beauty.

CELLRETURN

CELLRETURN LED Mask at JOYCE Beauty Gadget Bar
The CELLRETURN LED Mask Platinum

With its own LED module patent, the CELLRETURN LED Mask series offers a high-tech solution for skin problems and can tackle everything from wrinkles to double chins.

It utilises LEDs of three wavelengths, with each mode providing a different combination of wavelengths and near-infrared rays. The Red Mode is effective in improving skin transparency, density, hydration, elasticity and pores; the Blue Mode is ideal for troubled skin, possibly due to external irritation or cold wind; and the Pink Mode combines RED and BLUE wavelengths for concentrated care.

We love the Iron Man-esque look of the Platinum masks, which are equipped with more than 1,000 multi-coloured LED lightbulbs to generate near-infrared rays that penetrate deep into the skin to stimulate collagen production, reduce inflammation, and eliminate blemish-causing bacteria.

At HK$16,600, the LED Mask Platinum comes in white and features wireless charging, a nine-minute fast mode and a dual cover.

So that you’re completely covered, whatever your concerns may be, there’s also the CELLRETURN Hair Alpha-Ray (HK$18,000) for the hair and scalp, as well as the Alpha Neckle Ray (HK$7,700) for the neck.

For best results, the LED Mask Platinum should be used 3-4 times a week. Hair Alpha-Ray should be used 3-4 times a week for 20 minutes every day. Neckle Ray should be used three times a week for a minimum of 5 minutes up to 20 minutes per session.

Pair the treatments with serums and hair masks available at JOYCE Beauty. For the face, we suggest Omorovicza's Blue Diamond Concentrate, whereas, for the scalp, a good recommendation is the MD's Scalp Essentials.

NuFACE

The NuFACE Trinity Facial Toning Device at JOYCE Beauty Gadget Bar
The NuFACE Trinity Facial Toning Device

If you’re already au fait with beauty gadgets, NuFACE should be a familiar name. It promises a five-minute, at-home facial lift that improves your facial contours and skin tone while reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Choose from five levels of intensity up to 335 Micro Amps – its gentle microcurrent technology stimulates the face and neck. Plus, an app helps you keep your treatments on track.

For best results, it should be used for five minutes five times per week for about two months, and reduced to two to three times a week in the following months.

Both the NuFACE Trinity Facial Toning Device (HK$2,910) and Mini Facial Toning Device (HK$1,735) are available at JOYCE Beauty, as well as the pocket-sized NuFACE Fix Line Smoothing Device (HK$1,350), which is the world’s first pen-sized microcurrent device cleared by the US FDA for cosmetic use, and perfect for attacking fine lines and wrinkles.

PMD

PMD’s Clean Pro is available at the Gadget Bar by JOYCE Beauty
PMD’s Clean Pro

For those with oily and blemish-prone skin, PMD’s Clean Pro is a must-have double-edged device. At 7,000 vibrations per minute, the ultra-hygienic silicone soft bristles help break down dirt and oil deep within the pores. The Clean Pro (HK$1,400) is available in Blush with Rose Quartz and Black with Obsidian and comes with four customisable modes. For those whose blemish woes don’t stop at the face, the Clean Body (HK$1,240) can be used in other areas where the skin suffers from breakouts due to sweat, debris and ingrown hair.

Available in blush and navy, it includes three interchangeable/replaceable magnetic heads: a silver-infused loofah for gentle exfoliation; an aluminium oxide exfoliator to buff away rough, calloused skin; and a relaxing body massager to relieve everyday body aches.

It features yellow-light thermo-therapy and ionic cleansing, which opens the pores and brings negatively charged dirt to the surface of the skin; blue-light thermo-therapy and ultrasonic vibrations, which massage over blocked areas and loosen them up; and white-light extraction with different intensity levels to remove all dirt and sebum.

Loewe Paula’s Ibiza Collection is a Visual Feast of Summer Staples

Jonathan Anderson gets personal with the new Loewe Paula’s Ibiza collection, now available at Lane Crawford and on Loewe.com.

Loewe’s fourth collaboration with the legendary Ibiza boutique Paula’s reaches a turning point as it now offers a full-fledged collection for men and women, complete with ready-to-wear, accessories and a new fragrance.

“Ibiza has always been very dear and very personal to me: It’s my deepest tie with Spain, harking back to childhood and adolescence memories,” shares creative director Jonathan Anderson, who highlights the new collection with the kaleidoscopic nature-inspired motifs created by Paula’s founders, Armin Heinemann and Stuart Rudnick. The prints star mystical mermaids among red corals, while Jikin goldfish frolic among waterlilies.

Through this visual feast, and the off-duty ease of the classic summer staples, Anderson hopes to tap on the breezy spirit of the Balearics. The collaboration also celebrates the time when hedonism of these islands influenced subcultures across the world, as expressed in the “part rave, part cyberdog” segment of the collection that includes reflective silver trousers, spiky tops and day-glo sandals. “I’ve always said that Paula’s Ibiza embodies the spirit of letting go,” Anderson muses.

Alongside an array of playful accessories — think leather mini bags in the shape of octopuses, dolphins and whales — the partnership has debuted a unisex fragrance distinguished by opposing notes of warm ambergris and fresh coconut water. Anderson calls it “escapism, bottled.”

Originally slated for an earlier release, the new range has adopted a personal tone as he takes stock of the global pandemic. Before he introduces the collection in the press release, he added a thoughtful letter. The note reads:

“Dear reader,

Wherever you are, I hope this missive finds you well.

I know this is not exactly the ideal time to launch products, but this is a project all the craftspeople at Loewe have been lovingly working on for some time, giving life to objects that are exquisitely lively and optimistic — as craft always is.

This is a happy, undeniably escapist collection, conveyed through colourful and energetic images, and I thought it might cheer you up. As a visual feast, probably, or an aide-mémoire of better times to come. I’ll be happy for you to enjoy it, quite simply and very spontaneously.

I hope you and your family are safe.”

Jonathan Anderson gets personal with the new Loewe Paula’s Ibiza collection (Image: Loewe)

Craft is the heart and soul of Loewe. For the bags in this collection, communities of artisans used specialist handcraft techniques and naturally-occurring materials. A specially-designed sickle is used to cut palm fronds that are later sun-dried, before being braided into classic baskets using the Ilata technique, a traditional weaving style that originated on the Balearic islands.

Another example weaves wild reeds on traditional looms, fine cabuya thread derived from the agave cactus plant is spun, dyed in multi-colour sunset hues, and woven into shigra patterns — a unique signature of indigenous communities in Ecuador — to create the squared basket designs.

Anderson hopes the products will uplift spirits in more ways than one — your purchase is a pick-you-up that not only shows support for these artisans, it also helps to ensure a better future for children in socially vulnerable groups affected by the ongoing pandemic. Loewe will be donating €40 (HK$340) to educational projects for every product sold in this collection between May and August 2020, starting with an initial donation of €500,000 (HK$4.2 million).

The Spanish fashion house’s efforts extend to the donation of 100,000 surgical masks to the Spanish Red Cross. At the same time, it is producing non-surgical masks in its Getafe factory to be distributed to volunteer workers, Loewe employees and their families.

In Conversation with the Rose Quartz Facial Goddess, Angela Caglia

Angela Caglia – celebrity esthetician, skincare trailblazer and anti-aging pioneer is also the latest beauty export to arrive in Hong Kong. The skincare aficionado herself introduces how she brought Hollywood’s most talked about facials from her flagship Bel Air spa into the comfort of our homes.

We speak to Angela about how her skincare line (most known for her coveted La Vie en Rose quartz face roller) became a cult classic, her everyday skincare routine and a list of famous faces who swear by Angela Caglia skincare.

[caption id="attachment_169989" align="alignnone" width="4478"] Celebrity facialist, Angela Caglia.[/caption]

How did you come up with your best-selling La Vie en Rose face roller?

I've been giving facials for 25 years and we always use the gadgets. Women (and men) come in like clockwork every month for facials. But nowadays schedules are constantly full and people are not coming in as often as they should because of other obligations. I created [La Vie en Rose] so that they can have that facial experience in their own at home. You can get similar results at a fraction of the cost and it’s convenient too.

[caption id="attachment_169984" align="alignnone" width="2800"] Angela Caglia Vibrating Rose Quartz Sculpting Roller is available at Lane Crawford. HK$1,530.[/caption]

How does it work?

We started off with a traditional roller that works great. It’s designed to help with lymphatic drainage, puffiness and dark circles around the eyes. The cooling effect of the stone tightens the skin. Recently we’ve launched our vibrating rose quartz sculpting roller which delivers 6,000 sonic vibrations per minute. This helps sculpt and lift from the dermis and muscles, making it a more effective exercise.

The design is so beautiful! What’s your inspiration behind the design?

I’ve sold gadgets before but they required charging and looked really masculine. I needed something that women would actually want to use – it needed to be beautiful (almost like a piece of jewellery), effective and easy to use. I also wanted to give people that moment where it was just for them and not their husband or their kids; a personal moment where they can enjoy themselves and feel good, because no one else is probably giving them a massage or facial. I think a lot of people can appreciate that.

Of all the different types of crystals and their energies, why rose quartz?

The rose quartz is a love energy crystal and a self-esteem building crystal. I was the first to put the rose gold with the rose quartz together because I think pink on pink is just so beautiful!

What are the best products to use it with?

I love to use it with my detox serum. This is one of my popular serums. This is one of my most popular serums. It also has a treatment in it. I have a lot of clients that are acne-prone and this is the hyaluronic acid with chlorophyll which oxygenates the skin so it's actually a light green. I also have sage extract which purifies and also a little tea tee oil that kills bacteria. It goes right into the skin. It also has meadowfoam seed oil which is packed with antioxidants.

How do you use your roller and what’s your personal beauty routine?

I don’t wash my face in the morning and do my deep cleanse at night. I use my rose quartz roller with my new anti-pollution cleansing oil. After that, I apply my detox serum on my T zone. And then finish off my souffle moisturiser.

[caption id="attachment_169985" align="alignnone" width="5000"] The products Angela Caglia herself swears by. Facial in Mask 3-piece Set HK$455; La Vie en Rose Face Roller HK$510.[/caption]

Who are some of your famous fans?

Sting. Minnie Driver. Barbara Streisand. Chrissy Teigen. Helena Christiansen. Hillary Duff. Those are the only ones I’m allowed to say!

What’s next for Angela Caglia?

We really want a stronger presence in the Asian market. I foresee myself being in Hong Kong at least twice a year. I’ve also been busy building up the product line as I would like to introduce a wider range for different clients. At the moment, I have an anti-aging vitamin C serum that won’t oxidise in the works!

Taiwanese Designer Vivian Chang Explains How to Stay Cool in Cashmere This Summer

Vivian Chang

Cashmere for summer? Before you decide that I’ve gone utterly mad, let me explain. I’ve been crushing on Shanghai-based cashmere brand Crush for some time now. Founded by Taiwanese designer Vivian Chang in 2009, the cool, effortless, independent label has made a name for itself with timeless designs, beautiful fabrics and cross-generational appeal.

From feather-light tees and figure-hugging ribbed dresses to tank tops and formal-style jackets right the way to wintry chunky knits and fluffy teddy textures, Chang has made sure there’s plenty for every season -- and even the steamy summers.

“I started because I love cashmere, but I didn’t see any unique cashmere brands out there,” says Chang, who studied fashion design at FIT in Los Angeles. “In the beginning I had only that, but now I’ve incorporated some silk and cotton.”

Styles are minimal and clean, but easy to dress up with edgier, more trend-focussed pieces, such as a leather jacket, killer heels or flatforms. The texture and tactility is central to Crush.

[caption id="attachment_143743" align="alignnone" width="2362"] Crush variegated stripe rib knit t-shirt and skirt.[/caption]

“To start each collection, I visit all my suppliers and look at the new yarns they have,” Chang explains. “I combine different yarns to make my own yarn. I always start with fabric research.”

It’s this approach that defines the kinds of shapes and styles that the designer creates, while at the same time making sure it’s “all up to date”. Versatile separates mix and match well, and make for some of the most comfortable outfits I’ve ever worn. Very precise and clean, Crush keeps young through freshness of colour and modern style.

The brand has been a fixture at Lane Crawford for several seasons, a testament to how many fans it has year-round in this subtropical city.

“I’ve wanted to do this timeless style since I started,” Chang says. “My customers are very feminine and confident, and they travel a lot. My knits don’t get wrinkled so you can just throw them into your suitcase. It’s all hand-washing, so really travel-friendly.”

Chang’s focus on beautiful fabrics and timelessness puts her in a similar fashion vein to the folks at Loro Piana or Bruno Cucinelli, but obviously on a much smaller scale -- and more affordable. She’s now selling in almost 80 stores around the world, but doesn’t do much PR -- customers keep coming back for the quality, shape and form.

“When I first fell in love with cashmere it was with this type of chiffon-ish cashmere,” she says, showing me a well-draped, ivory- coloured top in her pristine showroom. “It’s so thin but still so warm, so you never have to look chunky in the winter -- just layer up. And for summer, it’s super light and comfy.”
